Is the battery more than 5 years old? That is the average life-span of an automotive battery.... some will last 10+ years and some 3 years. Voltage readings are not an indication of cranking amps, It can show 13- 14 volts but does not mean it has cranking amperage available to start the car. Yes, I am talking about a $100 to $150 battery, but worth every dime. Noe I know I have not answered your question. But was there a warning icon on the dash, that your battery was not accepting a charge? Could be cable(s) or alternator failed suddenly. and engine ran from battery power until depleted. I suggest having both tested.
