epc and cel light car won't start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

hi i have a 2004 vw jetta gsl 1.8t.  i was
driving about to merge onto a highway
when the epc light came and and the car
died. when i tried to turn it on again and
wouldn't start. i finally got it to turn on but
the epc light and cel light were on and the
car basically limped home. i parked and
went inside and when i came back out it
wouldn't start. i jumped it and it finally
started. my friend has a scanner thing and
it came back with a code P0322
Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input
Circuit No Signal. my question is could this
just be a dead battery with the epc cel light
and that code?  the used car dealer did
say the car had been sitting and battery
might be bad. if it is something with the
ignition and not the battery does anyone
know if that is costly?  i have limited funds
so i am hoping it isn't something expensive
i love the car :(

found this on one of my forums i frequent I would try changing the battery or charging the battery first tho. An auto zone will be able to do a test on the battery to see if its alright. Just be sure if you remove the battery it has a proper voltage from an alternative source to maintain a voltage connection while the battery is out such as a charger or booster box. i would then check the narness for signs of a short then and only then start changing parts. This is often the speed sensor first to go how ever so i would start there if the battery is good.
