What's wrong with my jetta? Blown motor?

Asked by Patrick Jul 20, 2015 at 06:16 PM about the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 1.8T Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car has been leaking coolant as soon as
you put it in from it looks like the
transmission area. Today I filled the car
with water and drove it on the interstate to
work. The car started getting jerky like it
was losing power.  So I pulled over and
when I did the car shut off. There was
excessive smoke under the hood and after
removing the oil cap, smoke coming from
there also. Tried restarting and  it sounds
like it just spins. No start. Looked at the
timing belt, it's still intact. Put a wrench on
the crank pully and it's turning. What's
wrong? Is it a goner?

The older model jettas had issues with the 4 prong radiator hoses. Normaly a leak happens around the temp sensor which also causes your car to not start because the car requires the sensor requires the sensor reading to run. I provided a pic so you can locate what i'm speaking about its called the coolant flange. This hoses are about 75% of the rad fluid leak issues. Replace the flange and sensor and you should be as right as rain.
