Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My AC still blows air but the air is not very cold.  Do I need to get a car repair place to put
in new/more freon?

Unfortunately, the symptoms may require more work. A leak check from a qualified A/C tech is advisable. If no leak, then have the tech completely evacuate the system and service it with new refrigerant. R12a Freon is pretty scarce and expensive. Hopefully, your '97 was originally serviced with R134a refrigerant...simplifies things. Also, any A/C service must be done by an EPA certified technician to ensure CFCs are not released into the atmosphere.

Good luck we have 2 jetta’s.. Both have so many problems. Door locks stop working, back door handles broke, air conditioning barely works, then stopped completely, transmissions needed to be replaced, on both cars! I will never buy a Jetta again.. EVER!

Wow vcwfj my post was 5 years ago and was easy Freon fix (but $$) at auto shop. Sorry you had so much trouble. My very old 1997 Jetta has been pretty darn reliable although the last AC fix was more expensive and trouble. And some small hose was not available even with internet search so had to get one at junk yard for about $4.00! Good luck
