Battery light came on and now the car wont start

Asked by Mar 23, 2014 at 11:51 PM about the 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier LS Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Alright so heres whats going on.

My roommate has a 99 cavalier with the 2.4l engine. He told me his battery light came on
so he purchased another battery and the light was still on. After the car stalled on him, i
checked the voltage and it seemed the alternator had went.

I replaced the alternator as well as putting in the new battery and now will the light not go
off, but the car wont start.

Im not sure whether this would be a ground issue from the negative cable for the battery
or what but please help.

Battery light is the alternator is not charging and not the battery. Check your connections, what is the voltage on the battery running, at 14V? If not, the new alternator is faulty. Is it a rebuilt one? 50% of them are bad out of the box.

it is a rebuilt one however i tested the batter and it came up at 11.9v. i was able to get the car started on a jump start but through further analysis it seems the accessory belt is not tight enough. This being the case could that have anything to do with it?

Battery should be 12.3V or higher with the engine off and a proper start. What is the voltage with the engine running?

with the engine running it jumped to 12.5 but once the jumper cables were taken off the battery voltage slowly decreased.

Your alternator is faulty bring back get a new one you should be 13.2v when vehicle is running

13.2v or higher up to about 14v over that your system is over charging

well I have a new Battery and Alternator and the battery light is still on in the car, what is the problem?
