Must I remove the engine cover inside the van to replace the alternator in 2000 chevy express 1500 van. Or can I get to it from under the hood? Thanks!

At the risk of necroposting, the easiest way to change the alternator is from under the hood. I believe you might have to take out the air cleaner box or move it out of the way, then disconnect the battery, remove the belt then remove the alternator.
