transmission will not go in drive. goes in reverse fine, what would cause this?

Driving along , everything working fine, stopped at stop sign trans. Would not
pull away , moved selector to all gear selections only would move in reverse.

Drained fluid, no discoloration, no burned smell, removed filter, no trash or metal in filter or pan. Truck has 92000 miles. Prior to complete failure after not being used for a week or so, when shifter was selected to drive sometimes it would hesitate then suddenly drop into gear.
