Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok, so looked at band new starter while trying to start 98 S10 and it is engaging and spinning flywheel just fine, yet the front of the motor only spins a little bit (kind of Hiccups), if you pull start truck it runs great. Cant figure out why starter and flywheel spin fine but not front of motor. It had the 2.2 4 cyl 5 Speed

Have you pulled the inspection plate and made sure you're getting a fly wheel spin? Full engagement and teeth lining up. You may ned to add or remove some shims in the starter to insure proper contact with the flywheel. If the flywheel is turning, which is bolted to the crankshaft, it should turn as the flywheel does. Either the starter is not making full and correct contact or you have a broken crank shaft from what your telling us. Since pull starting works and the truck runs fine, it is not the crank. What does jump starting do? Could it be a weak battery or connections and the starter is nearly spinning?

Yes pulled plate and watch starter spins. Starter is getting great connection and flywheel is spinning good. Also put newer good battery on. Haven't jump started it but did try battery boost and same thing, starter and flywheel spin while front kind of hiccups and barely turns. Yet lie I said runs perfect when we do get it started.

When you say the front kinda hiccups, is it the pulleys or belts or the harmonic balancer? What in the front are you seeing that hesitates when the engine is turning over?

all of the above, although we just found what we believe to be broken ignition wire. could that be the problem?

Oh you bets yea! If you drop an cylinder, teh car will "buck' or hesitate and run rough.

Motor runs great, flywheel spins but from of motor spins slow and then stops. Very confused

The belts and pulleys don't rotate as the motor spins? the front pulley that is bolted to the crankshaft is what turns all the belts and other pulleys. check to make sure it is attached firmly. the belts need to be tight and if they are lose, either from a stretched belt or very worn belt, OR a belt tensioner being bad, the pulleys will not turn and the belt slip. ZMake sure the belt is tight.Check all the belts and the harmonic balancer also.

I am having the same problem with my 2000 s10 2.2l 5 speed. Bout two different starters both made no difference. So with some good coffee I got under the vehicle and removed the inspection plate to be a able to see the starter make contact with the ring gear on the flywheel The key word here is RING GEAR!! So after seeing the starter make contact with the ring gear I could see what I thought was the whole flywheel turning. But kids after further inspecting only the ring gear was moving while the flywheel stays in place. My problem occurred after replacing the clutch and being lazy thinking the flywheel was in good condition to reuse. (It WAS NOT) so now I have to drop the tranny again!!! That’s my next step now I never seen a for sure answer on this thread so I figured this info could help someone out thanks guys!
