i cant get my 02 cavalier into first or second

Asked by iweldeverything Jan 19, 2014 at 03:48 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Coupe FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The shifter will go to the left for first and second but when I go up is third and down it's
fourth. There is a lot of play in the shifter. It seems like it's not moving the cable all the
easy over to grab those gears

Sounds like you could have a broke cable. Have someone move the shifter into the gears as you watch the linkage at the transmission. If one or both cables don't move that cable is broke.

It will move between 4 and 3 and over to 5 and r just not to 1 and 2. Would wouldn't it not move at all if it were broke?

If the selector cable is broke but not the shifter cable (if two cable model) it will do as yours does.
