5 speed manual on a 1997 chevy cavalier wont go into 1st or second

suddenly wont go into first or second all other gears fine. I cannot get the front
console bolt off to get a good look at the shifter linkage

got the console off and the linkage looks fine on the transmission and in the car under the console, it will go in first if I help it at the transmission but cannot get second -all other gears are fine
