using about 1/2 gal. coolant every 1000 miles, are these V-6 4.0 known for head gasket or intake gasket
issues ?

Not that I know of. Check other areas where it can be leaking from, the radiator, hoses, coolant resevior and or water pump. Best time to check is after you drive it for awhile heating it. Park it and pop the hood to see if you can smell it, steam or notice a wet spot.

they are know to have a leak on the back side of the lower thermostat housing you cant see it until gets real bad but ford keeps this part in stock
