Chevy Suburban Rebuilt Engine/Oil Pump

Asked by GuruDZ7Y5V May 22, 2024 at 02:12 PM about the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2004 Chevy Suburban had a rebuilt engine almost
2 years ago.  About 6 months ago oil pressure
light went on and the pressure only goes up when
accelerating.  Took it to a local shop in our new
area and they ran a pressure test, confirmed oil
pump needed to be replaced.  When they dropped
the pan there were a ton of metal shavings in the
oil.  They replaced the oil and put everything back
together without replacing the pump, said it
wasn't worth it.  We're in a very small county town
and its really hard to find a shop with the
knowledge of engines for a second opinion.
Should we get the oil pump replaced?  Or due to
the metal shavings is it really pointless?  We
already spent $4000 for the rebuilt engine so
another engine is not an option

Did they say what type of metal shavings? Bearing material or something more ominous? Either way the engine will need to be removed and torn down to see where the metal came from if you’re going to go there. If not then it’s a parts truck or scrap.

Did you see the test and shavings or did the just tell you that? Oil sending units on those motors are a common failure.

Loss of oil pressure at idle is a classic early warning symptom of bad bearings. So, since the rebuilt engine is only 6 months old it sounds like you have a warranty claim complete with a free loaner vehicle until your engine is replaced, again, free of charge! Jim
