2005 Suburban Z71- replace engine or sell as is?

Asked by Rana Mar 23, 2020 at 12:36 PM about the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 Z71 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a used 2005 Suburban Z71.  I was of course assured that
there were no issues with the vehicle.  Come to find out, they had already
replaced the transmission (which I suppose is good), but they covered up
issues with the water pump (which I just replaced for $690 along with a couple
other small things for a total of $1100).  After that was repaired I drove into
town and back, and new issues.  Come to find out the engine needs to be
replaced- which the seller knew, because my mechanic saw they were doing
things to try to cover up the issue.  $4800 for parts and labor for a
remanufactured with 3 yr/100K warranty.  I bought the vehicle with 136K on
the current engine, thinking I was getting a pretty good deal. So much for that.
I have only driven it 5 times since I bought it.  Should I replace the engine,
knowing the other repairs already done, or sell as is?  What do you think I
could get out of it as-is?

I've been down this road before!! Get rid of it!! Cut your losses and move on!! In 1984 I bought a '78 Cadillac Eldorado. I thought I was getting a good deal. I financed the vehicle for 3 years and wound up trading it in after 2 years and nearly $2000 in repair bills! I still owed $1200 on the car when I traded it in too!! It was an absolute disaster!! It was just one thing after the other with that car. Headlights stopped working, starter, alternator, tires, half of the exhaust system fell off (literally) as I was driving down the road, the transmission and radiator started leaking! It got to the point where it was in the shop for a repair of $100 or more once a month!! The final straw was when I was told it needed $1600 in front end repairs. This was in May of 1986 dollars!! So what I'm saying is you're not going to win with this vehicle! It's going to be just throwing good money after bad. So trade it in for whatever you can get for it and get yourself a vehicle that wants to run!! You deserve it!! Hope that helps! Jim
