4WD won't engage

Asked by Jan 05, 2014 at 05:33 PM about the 1994 Toyota Pickup 2 Dr DX 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1994 Toyota pickup deluxe, 5 speed manual, 22re engine. I lock the hubs, my
4WD drive light comes on, it shifts into 4 high and 4 low, but it won't go into 4WD. Any
ideas as to why this is happening?

Probably a bad hub. Lock it in 4x4 and have someone watch the axles when going SLOWLY. Whichever axle isn't turning is the bad hub.

Thanks for the help. Any idea how costly or complicated a hub problem is?

They can run from $50 - $300 depending on if you only replace 1 which I wouldn't do or both and if you do it yourself. The cheapest place to buy is probably ebay.
