Right to the upper left of your shifter there should be a tiny little access panel about the size of a stamp. Take a flat screw driver and pry it open. Then take your screw driver and stick in the hole and depress a button which is in there a couple of inches. That should enable you to get your car out of park. Check out video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhXeGKypsQ0 After you get it out of park, check your fuses and make sure the battery isn't flat dead.

I did find out from my manual how to do that and I was going to get that fixed when the gauges stopped working but I cant afford fixing it and the alternator if that is the problems I am wondering if they are related. The battery is new.

Put a charger on your battery and make sure it is fully charged. Your gauges should come back on line. If your alternator is dead, that is probably the reason for the check engine light. Take your alternator to a rebuild shop if possible. Much cheaper than buying a new one. Probably run you about $60 to have it rebuilt.
