I have a 96 Toyota Camry LE Auto 4cyl. Has a big problem upshifting. Now it shutters real bad going uphill, and the rpms go to 4 and 5k. I back off and slow down, soon having to pull over and stop.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Once i shut if off and start it again it drives 50mph til the rpms start going high again. I stop and repeat. Do i need a new tranny or could it be the shifting selenoid or sensors?

to properly diagnose this auto, you will have to pay a qualified tech to do a line pressure test to determine hydraulic or electrical failure. electrical fault codes may be set due to abnormal valve performance inside valve body. most normally its a half hour to 1 hour job to check properly. jamiealford.com
