Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2004 Subaru with 160,000 miles has a cracked head.  The replacement of the engine is aprox $3000 +  The interior is nice with leather seats and the body looks good too.  Is it worth it to fix?    Carma

Why not replace just the head or is the entire engine fried? If you need a new engine the car is probably not worth repair.

You can replace the head and both HGs of course, for under $2k. Chasing a used motor, installing new HGs for due diligence is in the $2k-2.5k range. Based on the 16 winter old chassis I would NOT proceed with either! It's true that the 2.5i SOHC is a sturdy block that generally takes head repairs successfully, and if yours was a clean 2008-2009 I might prevaricate...but not the older 2000-2004 body, as it's too corrosion sensitive in its soft rear quarters. Start over again. (Disclaimer: I sell perfected 2015-2018 OBs and Legs in the Boston area.) Good luck. Ern TSG/B
