Burning smell and smoke from the engine

Asked by Jun 15, 2012 at 09:53 AM about the 2001 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon

Question type: General

I have a 2001 Subaru Legacy BH5. They is a burning smell coming from the engine and i've noticed smoke from the engine after driving. I had the oil and the ATF changed and was told about the smoke plus burning smell.
I took it to get an engine wash but 4 days latter it's still smoking and has the burning smell. What could be the problem?

Your probably leaking oil, and it's hitting your exhaust and burning off, causing the smoke. Take the car to a competent mechainc to access the situation and get the correct engine gaskets replaced.

ehh, u dont have to take it to anyone. The valve covers are definitely leaking. they're very easy to change. biggest thing doing that tho, is to clean the seating areas of the gasket so there isnt dirt between the gasket and the cylinder head.

Pls check the ATF filler cap 1st, there's supposed to be an "O" ring on it, if not, than it's probably the cause of the oil leak. I had that symptom before...

Did you change your tires to different sizes recently? For example new tires in the front and leave your old ones in the rear? If so that could cause your issues. I had the same when I bought second hand winter tires. changing back to summer tires and the problem was fixed. I had the the same and could not find the cause either.

Look for the inner rubber of the drive shaft if is broken coz if is broken will spit grease to the down pipe of the turbos
