Coolant fans

Asked by Holden Dec 31, 2018 at 12:40 PM about the 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi my name is Holden and I’m currently
having trouble because my coolant fans wont
kick on for my 3100. As far as things I’ve
done I’ve, replaced head gaskets, cleaned
out coolant ports, replaced upper and lower
intake manifold gaskets, I’ve replaced the
temp sensor. Checked all fuses. I tested the
thermo in boiling water and drilled a 3/32
hole for north installation. Things to note is
the hoses are shit but I don’t think it would
stop fans from engaging. When I unplug the
temp sensor fans engaged.( but it is a new
sensor) interior fans do not work but worked
when I bought the car. I think blower motor is
bad. When flipping on ac there is not affect
on the fans kicking on. Please ask as many
questions as you want I just don’t understand
why the fans do not kick on. Car is 200 k and
I did put 50/50 green coolant in the vehicle
even though it calls for dex. I still flushed out
the entire coolant system

The blower motor and coolant fans are two totally different systems. The blower failure could be the resistor in the duct work inside the car. Did it stop working one speed at a time? Are you sure the engine is getting hot enough for the fans to come on? They rarely came on on my ‘03, especially in the winter.
