swap to a v8 for a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix

The 2001 Grand Prix is FWD, and V8 are usually RWD, so even if you can stuff an engine in there, it wouldn't work due to having to add a driveshaft and rear diff. Sell your car and pick up a newer G8 with a V8.

With some major reworking you might get a Northstar V8 to go in there. They're designed for FWD applications. But the Northstar blows head gaskets, all of them, sooner or later! So if the engine you're looking at has less than about 120,000 miles on it you're going to want to get the head gaskets done by someone who is familiar with these engines. It's not just a matter of pulling the heads, changing the head gaskets and putting it back together. There's a lot more involved. Plus you'll need the transmission to go with the engine. Then there's the subframe, suspension, and electronics that will all need to be changed. If the project is even possible it will cost more than the vehicle is worth and what you'll be able to sell it for once you're done. Most people are afraid of the Northstar, like me for example, and won't buy anything with one. That's why you can pick up an early 2000s Cadillac fairly cheap. Hope that helps! Jim

I agree with TDolby. For even more fun find a newer GTO. You won't be able to stop smiling and it's already a complete car and ready to drive.

The 2006 Grand Prix GTP was a fwd with a 5.3L V8. The statement about V8's being rwd only is incorrect. There are kits available to swap out the v6 for a v8 for the 2001 Grand Prix. See link below: https://engineswapdepot.com/?p=43634
