Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Reliable? Worth it?

I saw a pontiac grand prix 1996 for sale at a dealer that sells used cars. This car has had only one owner and it is in very good condition with low mileage and is being priced at 6500. I was wondering if it is worth the purchase? If it is reliable? I dont want to get ripped off, but I am very interested and I'd like to know more about it since I'm a female and dont want to be finessed.

First of all, determine how the dealer knows it is a one owner car and ask to see a "CARFAX" report identifying ownership and accident/repair history. Then have a shop you trust look over the vehicle and report to you what they find. While you are having the inspection done, have it looked at for tell tale signs that the car was involved in a flood incident. If you get clean reports, the $6500 price is OK but see what the dealer does if you offer less. I would start negotiations at $5500 on your side and hope to come out closer to $6000.

Look up the car's value on KBB (Kelly Blue Book) to get an estimate of the retail price.

The dealer is being optimistic because of its low miles and good condition. It’s not worth anywhere near what they’re asking. Have it checked out as others have suggested above. If it’s all good I’d give them a take it or leave it offer somewhere between $2500 and $3000 and then drive it long term till it’s worn out. They are good cars and routinely went 175 to 200,000 miles. If the dealer turns down your offer, leave your phone number and walk away. Good chance they’ll call you in a couple of days and say to come and get it.
