Why do my dashboard lights go dim when the engine is running day or night?

Whenever I turn off the engine my dashboard lights go bright. Whenever I drive the car day or night I can hardly see my speed or radio or climate control lights.

Problem solved by turning light switch to on instead of Auto position.
