Need to inspect for the leak. Pressure test cooling system. This will allow you to find the leak without risking damage to the engine.

If he has to add water, there is a problem,do as dandy said,to prevent futher damage to your engine.

The way to find out what triggered the CEL is an OBD scan. Many large parts houses will do it free. Or loan/rent you a scanner, but no offense intended, you may not know how to scan it yourself. Better to let them do it. Does it smoke from tailpipe? There is a long list of possible causes of overheating and coolant loss. And if the car has been running on straight water, especially non-distilled water, the thermostat will rust up in a short time
