I put a used transmission in my 90 town car & now it doesn't shift down smoothe

I put a used transmission in my 90 town car & now it doesn't shift down smoothe at all & I don't have 1st gear anymore.  Do I have linkage cable hooked up wrong?  Is there a way to adjust it so it will shift smoother?
