always drive with overdrive on for better fuel econony,only turn it of for towing or extra pulling power

if it is pushed in then its on meaning, you will have gear 1-2-3 and no OD (4), with it off unpressed in it means ur tranny will shift to 4th or overdrive...

same thing as a tow/haul button in a gm truck, if light is on then your od is disengaged and vise versa. the overdrive gears are specificly made to increase gas mileage and decrease load on the engine through gear multiplication (engine uses less revs to turn the driveline the same speed at a lower gear. use it when towing, and leave it off for better fuel economy

Helpful info. I bought a 1993 Grand Cherokee Limited in June 2008. It was built in their Canadian factory, so my owners manual is in French. :)

I was having the problem that the light was not going off. Be sure to check your transmission fluid. My fluid was low, the mechanic filled it according to spec. Now the light comes on for a couple seconds, then the light goes off. Have a good mechanic check it, or you could spend a lot of $$$$ and fix nothing.
