My 04 pt cruiser overheated and cut off. What is the problem? Can anyone help?

You may have several issues, low on coolant due to a leak, bad water pump, bad thermostat, bad head or head gasket. Overheating, not good, can cause more issues.

Driving until an overheated engine quits may be an expensive lesson to learn ... as Rowefast pointed out you may have done serious if not fatal engine damage. My guess is you will need a lot of work done to that engine before it will ever run . A car shutting down from overheating is like someone having a Heart-attack ,,,, they may recover ,,, but will never be the same

Yes...you may have more damage including a damaged head gasket that needs resurfacing and more extensive work to cooling system.
