Does Check Engine light briefly come on at startup?

Asked by NormaleD5580 Mar 09, 2022 at 06:40 AM about the 2005 Ford Taurus SEL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My check engine light has stayed lite for a few weeks.  I don’t drive very
often so I was procrastinating about taking it in for service.  The error code is
engine problem before 1000 RPM’s. Now the check engine light is not
lighting.  The weather has gotten warmer and now the check engine light is
not lighting.  I do not know if it is because it is not as cold outside or if it is
because the check engine light has burned out.  Several of the dash board
lights light briefly when I start the car.  Can you tell me if the check engine
light should light briefly when I start the car?

Turn the key to the ON position , Key On Engine Off (KOEO) the check engine icon should be lit , scan for codes , some codes are pending and may go away , some are confirmed and would need to be taken care of to get rid of . The clerk at auto zoo is not a technician .

Yes, it should. That tells you the diagnostics are working. It is designed to go out between 2 and 5 seconds. If it does not come on, orit comes on and stays on, you h ve a problem to fix.
