Replace cylinder head or check valves

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello,

I have a 2004 Ford Taurus which is having some problems. There is a lot of ticking noise from  under the valve cover and it is running terribly. It barely idles. I driving at higher speeds is no better at all.

I thought I might have a vacuum leak as well and while I was tearing things down I was thinking of checking the valves and lifters but I don't know an extreme amount about this type of work if one were bad. I do however have another ford Taurus that I stopped driving of the transmission but the engine was still strong.

It took a few days to tear my good Ford Taurus down to the cylinder head so I'm considering just putting the used cylinders head in from the old car rather than trying to check the valves. What do you think about this? I will get new head gaskets and bolts. I'm thinking this might be the easier option and since I know they are good it should fix my issue.

I think you should go with crate motors unless the under body is rotted out , you'll get an education at any rate . You're not restoring these things are you ?

No I'm not restoring them. I had a ford Taurus that lasted along time until the transmission began slipping. I found a used one for a reasonable price but the old engine was still running fine. The newer one I had was as lucky as the last with quite a few problems. I figured I could learn a few things and swap out a few things to make it run before just scrapping it. Shop said I needed a used motor for $1700 so I figured I'd take shot at it my self.
