Question type: General

I am looking at a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT-4.0V6-4X4-153K Miles - $3,590. It
was owned by a local fire station and was the fire chief's vehicle. Oil change
every 3k miles and maintained very well. Seller (used car dealer) says they
think the transmission was changed because the mfr sticker isn't on it. It is risky
to purchase this explorer?

$3500 would be the tops I would pay it would be if it was in excellent condition. Seller thinks the trans was changed? I don't trust used car dealers. But that is me. But if you really like it, get a mechanic to look it over before you buy it and have some extra cash available for future repairs.

Thanks for the response. My landlord was a mechanic and will take a look at it before the purchase. I agree with the comment about used car dealers, this one is pretty low key and it is their side gig. They seem like standup people, but you never know...

4.0 have 5 timing chains and very expensive to replace, at 153k miles it's due. Prepare urself with about $2 to 3k for timing chain replacement cost, depending ur location.

The engine is fine the transmission is what I'd be concerned with at those miles. If it has been properly serviced the timing chains should be fine.

Thank you all for your answers. I test drove the Explorer yesterday and it seems to drive well other than when I get up to 70mph the steering wheel shimmies a bit. Other than it potentially needing a balance, what can cause this? The dealer said the 2002 doesn't have the 4.0 exploder engine. That starts in the 2006 models. He dealt with one of those and never buys those models now. He seems genuine and trustworthy, but ya never know...
