What would it cost to replace the engine and tranny in a 2002 chevrolet Silverado 1500?

Asked by Sep 07, 2014 at 01:04 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS Ext Cab Short Bed 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 that I inherited when my
dad passed away.  The truck has 180,000 miles on it and my
husband wants to sell it and put the money in a newer model with
less miles.  I am having a hard time getting rid of it because of
sentimental reasons and was wondering what it would cost me to
completely replace everything but the frame of the truck.  The
interior is still great and the exterior looks great too.  Or would it just
be better to sell the truck and start over?

Are you having an engine or tranny problem? 180K is really not that bad on mileage as long as it has been serviced regularly.

I fully understand how much sentimental value a vehicle can have. Exactly what problem(s) are you having? As tennisshoes said 180,000 miles isn't that bad for this truck. Let's try to fix it for you. HTH. -Jim

If you are going to sell it, consider the cost of a new/rebuilt/crate engine and transmission against what you'd get for it selling after the expense. You can pick up a rebuilt engine for around $1500 to $2,500. Rebuild on the transmission if needed is in the area of $800.00. So assume if the work is done, it will run between $3,000 and top of $5,000 depending on what the labor is. Will that increase the selling price of the truck? See what other trucks that are high mileage are going for. If the body is near showroom condition, it may bring on the middle high end. Are brakes needed or shocks or front end geometry replacement need? High mileage trucks are always suspect due to wear of parts that will fail. Since it's a "gift" you may just want to take the money without putting anything in it. Have a good mechanic look at it, test the engine and transmission. Maybe just a tune up or slight adjustment in needed. With good care, there is at least another 100,000 miles in it.
