I heard a tick tick tick tick tick and then a pop. spark plug is out. what could be wrong?

Do you mean the spark plug is out of the hole? If it is than that was the pop, Either it was never tightened or there is another problem in the mounting .... . I once had a VW with a steel insert holding the spark plug that was pressed into the aluminum head. Odds are the sparkpug was never tightened ,,,, check the threads and put it back into the engine
