If your key has a "chip" on the shank it has the VATS (vehicle anti theft system) security system like my '94 Cadillac. The component most likely to fail is the lock cylinder. Inside the lock cylinder there's two contacts that read the resistance value of the "chip" on the key. Over time the contacts wear and no longer touch the "chip" when the key is inserted. When this happens the car "thinks" you're trying to steal it using a non-VATS key. First thing I'd do is take the ignition key to the Chevy dealer to find out which VATS key you have. There were 15 different possibilities. Assuming this key worked before. Then I'd replace the ignition lock cylinder and get two new keys made making sure to get keys with the correct resistance "chips" on them. The new lock cylinder will come with a template for cutting your new keys but you must have the correct VATS "chip" for the key(s) to start your car. HTH. -Jim

I have seen several times where the small wires inside the steering column break. You either have to replace the ignition lock cylinder or repair the wires. I have had good luck with both options.
