Removing the Rotor

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

There is a hub nut holding the front rotors on (see pic). How do I remove this? Do I need to replace this once I take is off? Is there a special tool should use?

looks like a standard 19mm Deep-well 12 point~ hammered into the keyway...an impact socket would get that NUT off of there~ might be 21mm don't have it in front of me... aside from the hammered nut (probably a new one with the kit)~ so no...no special tool...ordinary tool~

Put a good screwdriver between retainer and axle and pull down toward retainer, it should bend the metal enough to than unscrew nut under it with retainer. Be careful if it holds bearing when you put bearing back. Make sure recoat with bearing grease and seals are good. Turn rotor as you SLOWLY seat bearing, than back off a 1/4 or 1/2 turn, or u could damage bearings. You may even want to just replace bearings and seals, inspect them for wear.

Ahh, that nut does not hold the rotor on, that nut is holding the front axle in place.

That is just a cap nut that that keeps the main nut underneath it from backing off. Slide a small screw driver down into notch to straighten out and remove cap.

good point, probably a ball peen hammer will be needed after removing whatever screws holdin' it on~

Yes there bob, if anything is holding the rotor on, it would be a small screw in the rusted face of that rotor.

Once cap nut is off there is a regular nut underneath it. You can reuse cap nut once job is complete just put back over axle nut and use a small punch and hammer to bend back into key way.

Rowefast is right you do not need to remove this nut to get rotors off just spray some WD40 or PB blaster around area that rotor goes on axle then you can remove rotor one or two ways first a 8 to 10 pound mini sludge or ball pin hammer and give it a few good whacks or the screw holes in the rotor screw the right size screws into holes until rotor pops off.

we used to put the motor in gear and attach a "grizzly grinder" to just save the old rotor~ and NOT have to monkey around with the Hyundai which gave us NO CHOICE in the matter~
