What does it mean when the maintenance required light flashes off and on?

It means that it's become serious and you show have problem repaired. Go to Autozone and they will do a diagnostic for free.

If it is just the maintenance light it means that it is time for servicing, oil and filter change and whatever else is due at your current mileage. Now if it is a check engine light, then it means that something is wrong with the engine management systems and should be checked into before any engine or control system damage happens.

Then they most likely did not reset the light, the procedure for doing so will be in your owners manual, if you don't have the manual try you tube for a video on your year make and model.
