How do I get keys for ignition and doors for my 86 chevy iroc.

Asked by Rev_949 Nov 13, 2010 at 05:00 PM about the 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Dealer says there computer does'nt go back that far for the codes! Ignition key has a chip that they say cant be looked up by the vin # as well. It seems chevy is in the dark about what they have produced.... I find that hard to believe! Can anyone please help me out with a suggestion? I would greatly appreciate it, Thanks.

way i see it you'll have to either replace all the locks and ignition. OR Disengage the Security system(cant think of its name atm) and just have a professional lock smith make u keys (they wont have chip reason u disengage the system) Can prolly find out how to on Thirdgen.org

I use to own a 89 camaro and there the first camaro who had a chip in them. It shoulder be to hard to change. Ricks camaro has some ignition switches on there web site but can be pricey so I would go to a local junk yard and see if they have any third gen camaros that are 82' to 86' to be safe. If it was me I would take the whole coloumn out to make sure you have all the parts you need. It shouldn't be to hard to pull out. And some places will pull it out for you.

Well the resister chip has a certain resistance to it, and you cant by pass this at all its in the soft ware of the ecu, if the ignition doesnt have a certain resistance it will not start period. a lock smith can make a key but itll be usless, find someone whod be able to read the resistance requirement for ur camaro that'll be the only way even replacing the ignition won't help because to make the new key for tht ignition will require the old key for the resistance sorry for the bad news

are you sure it has a chip? my 86 does not just a metal key with black cover

I think the passkey started in 1989. My 1988 does not have it. I'm not sure if the keycode would be included on the sticker in the center console or not.

if it comes down to it you might just have to put a new ignition in.
