An e-sieries won't has a cradle to drop. Valve covers should be doable no matter the engine. I don't see head gaskets being done on a diesel in the van. A gas might be possible. It's no easy task either way.

On an 80's and early 90's diesel Ford van, you can do the heads and head gaskets with the engine in the bay: http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/engine/1988-e250-van-7-3-idi-head- gasket-job-without-pulling-the-engine/
