Question type: General

This more applies to the 90's era, but I've seen a lot of Explorers come
through and are pretty much as good as yard ornaments. But Rangers on the
other hand are more reputable and I haven't had to deal with as many of
them. From what I've seen, they're mechanically identical and my question is,
is what's the difference that I'm not seeing that makes Rangers reliable and
Explorers spend their miles on tow trucks.

Rangers are pickups and people tend to drive and repair pickups for a long time.

I've been working for Napa for 20 years and when I first started everyone called the Explorer the Exploder because we were always selling parts for them. It could have been poor quality control, the plant they were being built at, or poor quality parts. Hope that helps! Jim

I thought the Exploder nickname came from the 4.0 SOHC motor.
