After Installing a new water pump and serpetine belt on our 1995 Chevrolet and replaced the coolant, we drove it and the alternator was too hot to even touch it when he got back. Normal?

Is it normal for an alternator to get so hot you can't touch it, after installing a
new water pump and serpetine belt on a 1995 Chevy 1500? Also replaced the
coolant.

Maybe the battery was low, so the alternator was putting out a lot of amperage. They do get hot, just as long as it is charging, but if the battery is low it is hard on the alternator.

My experience the alternator gets hot way faster than the motor.
