What could cause cylinders 1 & 4 to stop firing and then work normally again causing the check engine light to come on?

My 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo was working fine, I got on the highway and it started running rough and I could not go over 50 mph.  I took it to the garage and cylinders 1 and 4 were not firing.  The mechanic took it around the block and all 6 cylinders were firing again.  I don't want to get stuck on the road with it.
