Needs head gasket replaced or buy used engine

Head gasket replacing runs about $1,500. Used engine prices are all over the map (500 to 5,000), and labor will be expensive. Those are just general figures, as you didn't mention your engine type of year.

How many miles on the engine? If it ran good and did not use oil I would do the head gaskets and timing belt, water pump and idler wheels.

If you buy a used engine I would do the head gaskets and timing belt since it is easy with the engine out.

Used engine condition can vary greatly, you really don't know how many miles or how it was maintained, be careful. At some point it makes more sense to invest in a newer vehicle with updated safety features and fuel efficiency.
