1999 toyota camry/acted erratic and died

started engine,engine sounded strange, like something was rattling, it made clicking
noises. turned engine off, and engine would not turn off , even when key was out of
ignition, put key back in, turned  and it just kept running, continued to make strange
noises.took key out , car continued to run, put key back in , and engine made strange
noise. put it in drive , drove it two feet forward, it smelled like something was burning,
turned engine off, engine turned off this time, and there was light gray smoke coming
from the hood. smoke subsided, tried to start engine. nothing worked. no lights, cant
lock car, windows , etc . nothing completely  dead . it has a new battery in it , installed
a month ago. i appreciate any guidance on the matter

Wow, what a story. It might have a new battery but it sounds like it has been drained. Open the hood and see if there is any visible damage.

Could be the starter remained engaged, then melted some wires.
