i have no spark in a 1998 vw beetle where do i start

no spark  getting fuel  my wife pulled in the garage shut it off and went out the next mornin
and it just cranked over but would not start

I would say to hook it up to a code reader first, then replace the coil packs for the spark plugs if the reader gives you no indication to issues.
