oil light came on and after i put a quart of oil in my car had thick white smoke coming from muffler. then started loosing acceleration and a loud put put noise started coming from engine

OK. the 'oil light', unless it specifically says so, does not mean just add a quart when it comes on. USE DIPSTICK. The light usually means oil pressure is low. Now, did you put the oil in the right place? Did you spill some on exhaust manifold or pipe? Please describe the noise.. knocking? squealing? what?
