First of all, Intrepid is a Dodge offering, though technically I know it is a Chrysler Corp vehicle. Secondly, it does't have a toming belt, but rather a chain with rollers, guides and a tensioner. It is true that it will need replacing at some point, but the biggest issue with the 2.7L engine is the "internal" water pump. Change this every 75-80K miles, use synthetic oil and do other needed repairs and regular maintenance and you engine can last 2-300k. Because the water pump is internal it will destroy the engine by leaking anti-freeze into the oil when it starts to go, and it doesn't take long. So keep an eye on the coolant level and at the first sign of using any get it checked. Good luck.
