mi just bought a 2000 kia sephia had it smoged it passed but now the check engine light has came on what shou i check first?

The first thing I would check is the gas cap. If the cap was left loose or if the gasket in the cap is missing or not sealing it will cause your check engine light to come on. If youre not sure, replacing the gas cap will take care of it or, at least rule it out.
