Just installed a new starter to my 1977 datsun 280Z does not turn over just a clicking sound what should I do?

Turn key to start touch the 2 starter wires leave them connect to starter see if it starts if it does the coils bad

strange reply above...did you check the flywheel and the clearance between the drive gear and flywheel ?
