Can my Fiesta run without the turbo?

Asked by Oct 05, 2016 at 07:07 AM about the 2003 Ford Fiesta

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Fiesta was making a very strange noise and lost a lot of power.  I have
been told that it needs a new turbo.  Is it possible to run the car without the
turbo?

Technically, it is possible to run your car without the turbo, but long term it will cause damage, lower fuel economy, and wear out parts. you could remove the turbo, but it will feel like the car is towing an aircraft carrier behind it, and you'd need a mechanic shop to reprogram the engine tuning. So, technically yes. In practice, it would be best to get it repaired soon, sell the car, or swap to a non-turbo engine (but that could probably be more expensive than repairing the turbo).

A turbo is not that much money. A turbo is about $265 on Ebay.

Stock is hard to find. It's a stock 3spd manual (C5) with a 2.3L turbo engine. That's all I know about the car. I want something more modern, hopefully with a 5 spd manual but not too difficult.
