1992 Oldsmobile 88 electrical partial failure

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 92 Olds 88  stopped running in the middle of traffic and would not restart.  The ignition cranked, but wasn't getting gas.  At the same time, I couldn't put on the hazard lights, use the power windows, etc.  After we got it into a parking lot at a shop, it started right up and ran fine, the lights and windows worked, etc.  However, about an hour later when the car was in the shop, the windows, etc. wouldn't work again and the car would still crank bu not get fuel  The mechanic said it was the fuel pump, but I think the fuel pump just wasn't getting power to operate.  The electrical system has been acting funny, even when the car is turned off, making strange whining sounds.  I don't have an owner's manual for the car because I bought it used.  The car is getting spark and some electrical things worked.  Does anyone have an idea where I can look?  Could it be something as simple as a fuse?

Windows, lights, fuel pump, ignition are not on the same fuse, so a single fuse isn't going to be the source of trouble. I'd start with the battery harness, check all grounds, then check wiring and grounds for the fuse box. Check for loose fuse holder or corrosion on the backing plane for the fuse box. Problem with electrical faults is they can be anywhere. Might even be a problem behind the dash, or with a module. You should be able to find an electrical schematic online, try Autozones "repair guides" on their web site, and pick up a meter and start checking continuity or for opens/shorts in the harness. Replace missing grounds and clean the existing ones.

Had this problem. Was the wires running under the floor along the sides of the doors. The wire protection tube fills up with water from rain and snow. It's a design flaw. Took 4ever too figure out. So random.

Great ! We were able to realize t hat when the car stalled, the power windows did not work. Turned out to be the grounds on the front drivers side on the floor, and Ccznder points out ! Very lucky to find this !
