Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a Pontiac torrent 2008 and I'm having a
issue with it over heating from going down the
road it's fine but if you idle it then the temp gauge
starts to raise to the red I've checked the relays
and their fine when it's idling I can put my foot on
the gas and the temperature gauge starts to go
down so I'm stumped please someone point me in
a good direction

When my '00 Grand Prix was doing the exact same thing it was the water pump. Are the radiator cooling fans coming on? If not, unplug the coolant temperature sensor and start the engine. The check engine light will come on because the sensor is unplugged. Ignore it. The radiator cooling fans should come on at high speed. If they do, the relays, fuses, wiring, and fan motors are all good. If not, further investigation is needed to find out why they're not coming on. Since the gauge drops when you increase engine speed, I suspect that the fans are working. My next suspect is the water pump (poor coolant circulation). Here's what my old water pump looked like. Notice how the impeller is rusted away? HTH. -Jim
