rx7 starts when starter is engaged then dies when you let the key back to the run position.

Check fuses first, if it's not that get the wiring diagram for your car (there's a few minor differences between the Cali spec and the normal model) and work your way through the emission control system. The way I see it, it's probably the ignition relay that's failed, that's the one part in the ECS that gets powered by the starter position of the ignition switch.
